"Navigatio ex Dania oer Mare Balticum" (1260) mentions the Utö route. Utö was first inhabited in 1540. The islands of Utö and islet groups are situated, in the style of a gate, in a line of reefs by which access is gained to the inner Archipelago Sea. The narrowness of the gate is evidenced by the dozens—even hundreds—of shipwrecks in the waters of Utö. 
 
The island has a harbour, pilot station, a lighthouse taken into use in 1817 (originally built in 1753 but later destroyed), in connection with which there is a chapel and historical monuments. At the local arts and crafts museum, you can acquaint yourself with the life of the lighthouse keepers, pilots and soldiers. The old fort has served for decades as a garrison. During the spring and summer, the solitary islets are at their most beautiful—when nature awakens, the birds nest and boats fill the docks. The Eivor connecting vessel regularly services the island.
