Bengtskär

Get acquainted with the legendary charm of Bengtskär Lighthouse Island. Ascend the 252 steps yourself to arrive at the highest lighthouse in the Nordic countries. Bengtskär is Finland’s southernmost inhabited island.
Facing the Gulf of Finland, the tallest lighthouse in the Nordic nations at 52 metres above sea level looms 25 kilometres southwest of Hanko. The lighthouse is situated at the outermost islet of the Archipelago Sea in the eastern area of the North Baltic Sea. The island belongs to the archipelago of Turunmaa and is Finland’s southernmost inhabited location. The closest archipelago village, Rosala, is situated 18 kilometres north of Bengtskär.
Bengtskär’s lighthouse is the most splendid and most impressive attraction in the Archipelago Sea. Its massive stone walls have witnessed many of our history’s most momentous events. For nine decades, the lighthouse has safely guided thousands of mariners to safe routes of passage.

Bengtskär’s Lighthouse Island is the outmost islet in the outer archipelago. In addition to its historical and cultural value, the isle is interesting for its nature, because it is a very austere islet far in the open sea. The size of the island is only two hectares, of which only a few hundred square metres has vegetation: the rest is made up of lighthouse structures and hard bare granite interspersed with small basins of rock.
